what a letter can mean

Have you ever received a letter that encouraged you so much that you kept it to read, re- read and re-read again?  I have!  When I was twelve years old, Sarah and Grace Mally wrote me letters.   I was so surprised and excited to receive them!  The letters encouraged me to live for Christ, make wise decisions while I am young, and shine His Light.

This morning I got out my letters from Grace and Sarah to read again, I took out a piece of stationary and a pen and wrote a letter to one of my younger friends.  I hope that she keeps it, and it encourages her as much as Sarah and Grace's encourage me....perhaps she will take it out in a few years, read it again and pass on the love by writing a letter to someone else!  I am so thankful to Sarah and Grace for taking the time to write me and I pray that through God my letter will make an impact on the life of that sweet little girl!

My blog has been left alone for a little while, I am still going to try to post a few pictures and stories throughout the summer, but it will not be as often as during the winter. I am busy with many wonderful activities!

TeenPact | Changing Lives to Change the World

I attended my first state TeenPact class this past March-April.  I was amazed at how much I learned not only about my government, but about my faith.  I learned about my government from a biblical perspective, made many new friends, played ultimate frisbee, went on prayer walks around the capitol, worshiped at my capitol, and so much more.  I can't tell you all that I learned.  By the end of the week I felt like I belonged at my capitol!  It was definently worth all the time and money. If you live in the United States, I greatly encourage you to look into TeenPact.

What is TeenPact? This was taken from the TeenPact website
TeenPact is a dynamic, hands-on leadership school for Christian students. Our mission is to train youth to understand the political process, value their liberty, defend their Christian faith and engage the culture at a time in their lives when, typically, they do not care about such things.
The TeenPact experience is one of intentional growth, education and encouragement. We believe that God gives every young person a great spiritual capacity as well as a scriptural mandate to cultivate and use their talents – even before they are old enough to drive, work or vote! TeenPact trains these young people to embrace their call as the next generation of leaders by giving them tools, teaching and opportunities.
Each TeenPact program is marked by spiritual discipleship, student leadership, parental involvement and a commitment to excellence. Our loyal base of parent volunteers and student leaders keep the vision alive and growing as we continue to expand nationally. Founded in 1994 by Tim Echols, TeenPact currently offers classes in 38 states and counting.
“Changing lives to change the world” is more than a motto to us. It’s literally what we do every day.

Memorization Challenge

how our family started memorizing~

When I was younger we would go to a hospice home and do small presentations for the people there.  One of the times Mom asked me to memorize John 3:16 so that I could recite it for them. After that performance she asked me to memorize John 3:17 also, but I said, "I don't want to, do I really have to?"  She answered, "No, I can have Grant memorize it for you." :~)   That was just too much for me! I said, "No!  He can't memorize it, that is my scripture!"  So, I decided to not only memorize John 3:17, but the whole chapter, so that Grant couldn't out-do me.  : -)

Sometime after this Dad would read the Proverb of the day each morning at the breakfast table.  Since there are 31 Proverbs and at the most 31 days in a month, there is a Proverb for us to read each morning.  This particular day was January 9th, my birthday,  and as Dad sat down and opened his Bible he said, "Lydia, this is your Birthday Proverb!  We should all memorize our Birthday Proverbs." People started protesting, "That is too hard, I can't do that!"  Mom said, "There is no way I could memorize a whole Proverb."   But, Dad insisted that we all should at least try to memorize them.  Now Mom has not only memorized Proverbs chapter six, but several other Proverbs as well.

That is how our family started memorizing.   We have to give God our little bit and He will use it.  You give Him your five loaves and two fish and He will multiply it!  But, we have to be ready because we don't know when God will bring those opportunities along.   If Dad wouldn't have told us to memorize our Birthday Proverbs and Mom wouldn't have given me the incentive to memorize John 3 we would never be able to share the blessings with others that we are able to today!

the challenge:

Psalm  19 has 15 verses in it, the goal is to memorize three to four verses per week.  Now you who are out there saying, "I am glad that some people can do that, but it's just too hard for me":  How many scenes out of your favorite movie do you have memorized?  How many songs?  Come on!!  If you can memorize all those things that are temporal, you should be able to memorize at least 15 verses of God's Holy, Eternal Word!

Maybe you are into memorization already and have quite a few chapters memorized.  Well, you can never get too much of God's word!  Also, go and vote on the poll in my sidebar so we can all see how many chapters you have memorized!

how to join:

  • Leave a comment with the link to your blog in it (I will add your link to the contest participants list)
  • (optional but, appreciated ;)  add the contest button to your blog (you can get the code from my sidebar) and post about the challenge

Being Prepared~

Memorizing God's word is soooo rewarding!  I am working on Acts 3 (the story about the lame man at the Temple).  I have 3 verses to go!  We always have to be ready to share the hope that is in us (I Peter 3:15).   ~ Be ready to share a testimony, quote scripture, and encourage someone in need.  If we are ready God will give us opprotunities to use our skills for His Glory!

Great family examples of being ready~

A few years ago at a Father/Son retreat my brother Grant was asked by the director of Camp Barakel if he would be willing to recite the book of Jonah that evening during Chapel.  Since Grant had been practicing what he already had memorized, he was ready to encourage others in the Lord by reciting.

Over time I have accumulated quite a few stories that I have shared at our Bright Lights group.  I keep all of these stories in a folder on my shelf so that when I have a chance to use them I can quickly find one for whatever subject I want.

As some of you know, we have been in a few shows with a drama group.  At each of the rehearsals there is a devotional done by one of the cast members.  Last year I was able to share the story of Mr. Eternity with them because I had been ready.

"It is a great feeling to be used by the Lord!"

1 Peter 3:15 (King James Version)
"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear."

An example of NOT being ready~

Up above I used examples from our family's ministry, this is another example from our ministry about not being prepared.

For awhile I depending a lot on Haley to get everything for me when it was time for dance class or a dance presentation.  I would be walking out the door and say, "Haley, did you get me a water bottle? ...Oh, did you get my whistle?"  Haley is a wonderful sister and she always would say "yes".   But, one time we arrived at our destination for a performance and I realized that I hadn't got my Irish whistle, as usual I said, "Haley did you get my whistle?"  This time she hadn't and I wasn't sure what I was going to do!

We ended up finding it, praise God, but I needed to learn responsibility and not expect everyone else to do things for me.

{Bible Bee}

On Saturday we had our local competition for the Bible Bee!  We had a great time, but the most important part is what we have learned.  I have been able to use a lot of the verses that I memorized for different instances in my life already.
God has taught me to stay faithful,  when I first was starting my study I was overwhelmed, I thought that I would just quit.  I am so glad that I kept on going,  I feel like I can say, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.  (2 Tim. 4:7)"    God helped me and my siblings keep going!

Haley took first place in her category!

I had a great time taking closeups of the trophies!

~I love all their symbols for everything~

The best thing is that we can never be sorry that we tried, you always will win no matter what when you are studying God's word!   Me and my siblings are always going around singing Bible verses!

We find out on Wednesday who made it to nationals.  I will let you know.

A Sunday post--

An encouraging story about witnessing...

Recently my sister, and I went out witnessing with some friends. We split off into two groups and went our separate ways to share the good news! The first group of people, that my group went up to didn’t want anything to do with us, but we couldn’t give up there so we went on to some other people, who were very happy to listen! We ended up witnessing to 8 different groups.  One of whom we got to pray with to except Christ! I had a wonderful time and can’t wait to go out again!

Have you ever got to share God's word with someone?  If so, I would LOVE you to leave me a comment so I can hear the story!

23 Great Bible Memorization Tips!

Bible Memorization Tips:
1. First read the passage through 5 times to familiarize yourself with it. Next break the passage down phrase by phrase. Read the first phrase 10 times, then say that phrase out loud 10 times, or until you feel familiar with it. Add on the next phrase, using the same method, then say the first phrase and second phrase together. If you’re unable to recite them together comfortably, repeat a few more times before adding on the third phrase and repeating the process until the entire passage is memorized.

EXAMPLE:

Step #1: read through Genesis 2:15-17 5 times.

Step #2: Take the first phrase from the verse and read it out loud 10 times: The Lord God took the man. The Lord God took the man. The Lord God took the man, etc.

Step #3: Recite that first phrase out loud 10 times (or as needed) without looking.

Step #4: Add a second phrase and read IT out loud 10 times: and put him in the garden of Eden. And put him in the garden of Eden. And put him in the garden of Eden, etc.

Step #5: Recite that second phrase out loud 10 times (or as needed) without looking.

Step #6: Put the first and second phrase together and recite: The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden.

Step #7: Continue adding phrases and repeating steps
2. Recite passages out loud to keep yourself focused.
3. Review verses daily. Take note of any verses you struggle through and work on them more.
4. Note the repeated phrases in verses with slight variations. Often these little differences will throw you off. Example: In Genesis 1:26-28, it reads "and over ALL the creatures that move ALONG the ground" in verse 26 and "and over EVERY living creature that moves ON the ground" in verse 28.
5. Pay close attention to occurrences of “and”, “then”, “so”, “for”, etc, tenses, and singular/plural forms of words.
6. Think about what the verses mean as you recite them.  This will help the words come easier since it makes sense.
7. Note the different names of God used in the passages--God, the Lord, the Lord God, the Lord your God--and think of something to trigger your mind into remembering which name is used in a specific passage.
8. Often the hardest part of reciting is figuring out the first words of a passage. Does it start with “and”? Or was it “then”, “for”, “so”, or “the”? Think of things to help trigger your memory for this.

9. Have a passage that contains a list of things that’s confusing you and causing you to mix up their order? Find something that triggers your memory into remembering the correct order. Example: in Exodus 25:1-8, the items listed to receive as an offering from the people are 1: gold, silver, and bronze--these are listed in standard order of medals. 2: blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine linen—purple is sandwiched between the two colors you mix to make it: blue and scarlet (red).
10. Have a passage that lists just two things you keep mixing the order around for? Check and see whether or not they’re in alphabetical order, take note of it, and use that as a test to trigger your memory. Example: in Deuteronomy 4:31-40, it says, “For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not abandon or destroy you...” Confused about whether destroy or abandon comes first? Alphabetically, abandon comes first, as it does in this verse, so I take note of that and when confused, call it to memory.

11. If you’re a visual learner, grab a piece of paper and some colored pencils and draw pictures for each word in the passage to help you remember the verse.

12. If you’re a hands-on learner, come up with hand motions to the verses.
13. Write or type the verses out several times.

14. Write the verses on a marker board. Read them aloud, then begin erasing words one or two at a time, drawing a line every time you do so to represent the missing word. Read through the verse again, inserting the correct word into the blank(s) when you come to the empty spot(s), and continue to erase words until no words are left. Can be done alone or with siblings taking turns reading and erasing.
15. Write each word of the passage on a separate slip of paper. Arrange them in the correct order, read through them several times, then scramble them up. Start a timer and see how quickly you can arrange all the words in the correct order. Continue to compete to beat your former records. Take turns with a friend or sibling for some fun competition. Works best with individual verses or small passages.
16. Record your verses on an ipod, mp3 player, or voice recorder. Play it back and listen to them. Listening to scripture familiarizes you with it, making it easier to memorize. For passages you’ve already memorized, play back the recording and recite a second or two before it. This is a way to review when you have no one to quiz you.

17. Recite the verses in chant or to a rhythm.
18. Write references on slips of paper and put them all around the house where you will see them constantly, be reminded of them, and review them. Put them on your bathroom mirror, your refrigerator, your computer, your TV, your bed, beside your light switch, and any other place you frequent. (You can even laminate some and put them in your shower)
19. Bring your verses with you everywhere and pull them out when waiting in lines, driving, or have spare moments.
20. Let your family and friends know you’re memorizing and tell them to hold you accountable and quiz you on your verses whenever they see you.
21. Don’t have someone to quiz you and aren’t sure if you’re missing or adding words to your passages when you recite? Type up or write out your passages from memory, then check for errors.

22. Review or memorize new passages as you fall asleep at night. Your mind will continue to think on the passages while you sleep and you will often find you know the verses better in the morning than you did the night before.

23. Work, work, work, work, and WORK!! With time, discipline, and much review, scripture memorization is both possible and SO rewarding!

Thank you to Miss Sarah for these memorization tips!

I Love God's Word!

Recently my favorite chapter of the Bible has been John 14 it is an amazing chapter to defend the christian belief of the trinity!

"Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?  the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works."  (John 14:10)

"Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me...."
(John 14:11)

I hope that you take the time to read John 14, I believe that it will really speak to you as it did me!  I would love to hear what you learn if you read it!

Lance is amazing!!

This year Grant was suppose to memorize Philippians 2:1-4 for the baseball team that he was on. Since Grant recited it so much, Lance was able to memorize it! Since Lance already had the first four verses he decided that he might as well memorize verse 5 also! Lance loves reciting for people, a few months ago he came home and told Mom that he had just recited it for the neighbor boys!

Bright Lights

Hello all!

We had a great time at Bright Lights last night!

We talked about contentment, and how we will just take things like eyesight for granted.

What is the most frequently used excuse when you encourage someone to memorize scripture?

The topic of the month: Memorization.............

Some tactics on how to memorize scripture.

1. Read the scripture at least once a day.

2. If you find it hard to remember more than one verse a week, than just pick a verse that you like, and work on that verse until you have it perfect. Then move on to more verses per week.

3. Sometimes if the verse is too long for me to get it in one day, I will just work on it line by line, or even word by word.

4. If you are trying to get the scripture memorized word perfect, it will take a little more time. I suggest that after you have the verse pretty well, have someone read along while you recite, so they can help tell you when you have made a mistake (try not to get too irritated when they keep correcting you! I must confess that I have a hard time with that one). Even if you aren't trying to memorize word perfect, it helps to have someone read along.

5. Keep on working on the scripture, if you take a break from memorising for even a few days it is harder to recite when you start again.

With that said, I encourage each of you to memorize your Birthday Proverb. I will explain what this is. Since there are at the most 31 days in a month, and there are 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs, each day of the month has a Proverb for that day. Since my birthday is on the 9th, my Proverb would be Proverbs Chapter 9. Do you understand? If you don't, PLEASE leave a comment to tell me so I can explain it more, because I want as many people as I can get to memorize scripture.

This is a great excersize for your brain!

I hope to get many reports on how well you are doing on your memorization!
